The Way of the Righteous

What They Do

Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers. But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on His law he meditates day and night.  He is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither.  Whatever he does prospers” (Ps. 1:1-4).

The blessed man of God finds his delight in the law of the Lord.  This Hebrew word for “delight” (hepos) expresses all that makes the man of God happy.  The earliest translations of the King James Bible says, “…his will is in the law of the Lord.”  The application of this portion of Scripture is that the Christian’s heart and pleasures in the Word are found not only in the promises for obedience in the Bible; nor do his fears overcome him because of what is threatened for disobedience.  This man has revelation from the Holy Spirit that, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God” (John 1:1).  He knows that it reveals Christ and he knows the joy of living by every word that comes from the mouth of God. His full delight does not come just by knowing, studying and memorizing the Word of God, but in doing God’s will as the Holy Spirit reveals it to him as he meditates upon the written Word.

The blessed man’s delight in God’s Word births forth meditation, and “he meditates day and night” upon it.  Meditation (Hebrew hagah) “…is not [only] setting apart of a special time for personal devotions, whether morning or evening, but is reflection on the Word in the course of daily activities.  It is an activity of holy thought…” consciously lived out under the empowering of the Holy Spirit.  It is that calling to mind, thinking it over, dwelling on and applying oneself to the various truths found in the Bible. This enables Christians to follow His ways and achieve His purposes.  The Lord told Joshua, “Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth, meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it” (Joshua 1:8).

The result of this meditation brings clarity of God’s will.  The child of God actually begins to think Biblically before making decisions and in battling temptations of the flesh, the world and in facing the lies and deceptions of the devil.

The psalmist says that the blessed child of God finds his delight in and meditates on the law of God.  The law (Hebrew torah) “…as it is used here in the broad sense refers to any instruction flowing from the revelation of God as the basis for life and action.”  The blessed Christian is receptive to, communes with and lives out the instructions of God.  He seeks the whole counsel of God’s Word and enjoys the abundant life promised to the child of God.  The Old and New Testaments come alive to him as he reads.  His response to the Word of God causes him to compare himself to what the Bible says.  This indeed, at times, involves an inner conflict with oneself and surrendering one’s moods of doubt and unbelief over to the cleansing power of the Holy Spirit then choosing to trust in the sovereignty and grace of God.  Proverbs 3:1-6 teaches that the blessed man receives the law of God.  He then writes it on his heart and applies it to his daily life.

Choose today to walk in the blessedness of God by receiving Christ as Lord and feeding on the perfect law of God.
