Walking in the Blessedness of God

PS 1:1
 Blessed is the man

who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked

or stand in the way of sinners

or sit in the seat of mockers.

PS 1:2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD,

and on His law he meditates day and night.

PS 1:3 He is like a tree planted by streams of water,

which yields its fruit in season

and whose leaf does not wither.

Whatever he does prospers.

PS 1:4 Not so the wicked!

They are like chaff that the wind blows away.

PS 1:5 Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment,

nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous.

PS 1:6 For the LORD watches over the way of the righteous,

but the way of the wicked will perish.

This psalm may be regarded as “The Preface Psalm,” having its truths found and reiterated throughout the entire Book of Psalms.  The psalmist desires to teach the reader the way of enjoying the abundant life that is found in a heart surrendered to God, Christ and the Holy Spirit.  This divinely inspired psalm appropriately introduces the blessings of God to all who respond in faithfulness to the Lord.  In addition, it forms a background for distinguishing the righteous from the wicked and provides the basis for the blessing of obedient Christians versus the cursing of the wicked.

In verses one through three, the psalmist sets out the source of happiness and the blessedness that comes with delighting yourself in God and His Word, shunning sin and being His true child.  In verses four and five, he candidly describes the character of the person without Christ, his future and, if he remains unrepentant, his ultimate doom.

Some will choose the “way of the righteous” (verse six) characterized by love for God and readiness to live out His commandments.  Most, however, will choose the second way to live described here--“the way of the wicked.” The Lord offers no eternal blessings to those who refuse to be reconciled to Him through having Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord.

Dr. Willem A. VanGemeren wrote, “There are only two ways in life: The way of God and the way of man; The way of wisdom and the way of folly….”  God told the prophet Jeremiah to write, “Furthermore, tell the people, ‘This is what the LORD says: See, I am setting before you the way of life and the way of death’ ” (Jeremiah 21:8).

God is not a man that He should lie. “For the Lord knows the way of the righteous…the way of the wicked will perish.” The Holy Spirit beckons you.  Come to Christ today.
